Online functionality and being able to play the game aren't the same thing.
Street Fighter IV, for example, was cracked before it was even officially released. Much of the "crack" involved simply bypassing windows live. The is the method to bypass most security btw.. If it's a windows live release, bypass windows live, if it's a steam release, bypass steam. As I said before, it's usually as easy as replacing a generic dll.
Steam is not the end-all and be-all of pc game releases anyway. Generally the non-steam version is cracked.
Ahh the younger generations and their fps and mmorpgs. Single player or GTFO!
