It's possible you bought a refurbished drive and the seller didn't bother to mention that.
I have here about 15 WD green externals with the majority being 2 TB and a few 3 TB with 8X 2 TB internals inside various rigs around the house and only 1 has ever failed me.
With that 1 failing and throwing errors all over the place, I will still able to extract all the data from it even though I had all backed up already.
I recommend people use SSD for O/S drive and WD green for everything else. The WD green preform very well using a lot less power and not spinning at all when they are not in use. A small delay isn't so bad at first access.
