MESS 0.147 at486: What am I doing wrong?
10/29/12 05:17 AM Attachment: at486.png 73 KB (0 downloads)

I know I should have posted this at bannister, specifically this thread, however I don't have an account yet.

This channel on YouTube inspired me to run my own DOS virus tests and DOS virus simulations for my own. The problem is some viruses run faster under virtualization. So I decided to finally give it a try to MESS (if it can run Windows 95, it could properly emulate a virus I think).

MikeAbson assures you can install or at least boot MS-DOS directly from MESS, however I've been unsuccessful at the moment. I've set the driver with the default settings (deleted cfg and nvram directories). I've configured the CMOS properly, set boot order right and created the CHD as instructed. MESS stated the CHD and bootable floppy loaded successfully, I even pressed Shift+F3 after loading them to ensure emulation detects them. I tried the bootable floppy at dos622.zip from ibm5170 softlist just in case. Yet, the result is the same (see the screenshots below).

Code:

C:\Emus\MESS>chdman.exe createhd -o at486.chd -chs 1015,16,63
chdman - MAME Compressed Hunks of Data (CHD) manager 0.147 (Sep 17 2012)
Output CHD: at486.chd
Compression: none
Cylinders: 1015
Heads: 16
Sectors: 63
Bytes/sector: 512
Sectors/hunk: 8
Logical size: 523,837,440

C:\Emus\MESS>floptool.exe identify DISK1.IMG
DISK1.IMG : PC floppy disk image

C:\Emus\MESS>imgtool.exe identify DISK1.IMG

pc_dsk_fat PC floppy disk image (FAT format)

I know the disk is bootable because I use it to install MS-DOS 6.22 under Virtual PC/VirtualBox. Yet I can't figure out what I am doing wrong. Anyone has a clue or suggestion about this matter? Thank you in advance.
