They are indeed 3D objects now and VP has really come a long way in terms of entertainment and fun factor.
It's quite the PITA to set up initially, but once you understand that and get through that process then it's a lot of fun.
10+ years ago I have had the opportunity to play around 100 real pinball tables which I can't do any longer due to moving halfway across the US. VP allows me to relive those days and a lot of tables are recreated very well.
In terms of fun factor alone VP 9.x Cabinet Tables (FULL SCREEN)tables are much more fun than anything available retail currently right now, even though I support the Pinball stuff and buy it from the PSN for my PS3
