My in-laws rented an apartment for a long time in a fairly well-to-do neighborhood. On Halloween, kids used to show up in the neighborhood by the van-load, to get the good candy the rich people were handing out. Even buying the usual Halloween candy, my in-laws couldn't afford to keep up with the sheer volume of people coming to the door. Their solution was to basically kill all the lights and hide out in the dark every Halloween. I think a better one would have been to hand out something inappropriate like candy cigarettes. Once word got out, I'm thinking it would have thinned out the crowd a little.
