yeah. software folders have been removed at least 4 years ago (and in the final period they were only used by MESSUI not from command line)

Now you
- either load any file by specifying its full path (both from command line, from the File Manager in the Internal menu and in frontends)

mess nes -cart "C:\My\NES\game\folder\super mario bros.nes"



- or you use software lists, store the files in roms\nes\ and launch

mess nes -cart smb



(in this latter case the "nes" name of the folder corresponds to the nes.xml software lists, so that e.g. Sharp X1 games will be split in roms\x1_cass\ and roms\x1_flop\ since X1 emulation supports two separate software lists)
