The SNES Sim City Challenge
08/29/12 12:06 AM

The other night I was browsing the Wii store and noticed that they have Sim City available. That was one of the first games that I bought for my SNES and I played the hell out of it back in the day, so I figured I'd buy it on the Wii and give it a shot.

I spent a few hours reacquainting myself with the game and my first city topped out at around 450,000 people and wouldn't go any higher.

I started a second city and planned a little better and so far, this one is at 375,000 residents without having placed a single gift. I'm trying to tweak my layout to get the population as high as possible this time before I use gifts since you can't move them (or get them again) once you plop them down.

I'd be curious to see what strategies and city designs other people come up with and how high they can get their population without resorting to lame cheats.

So here are the rules of this challenge
(if there's something I didn't address, just ask and I'll clarify the rules)...

1) It must be Sim City for the SNES, either on a real SNES, on the Wii, or in an SNES emulator. No other version of Sim City qualifies.

2) The only "cheat" you can use is the money trick (described below). I don't really regard this as a real cheat since the fun and challenge to Sim City is building the best design, not waiting for tax money to trickle in. No other cheats are allowed, including game genie/shark codes.

3) No "zone stacking". This means that all normal zones must be full 3x3, and no destroying parts of the airport, seaport, power plants, etc to make more room.

4) It's OK to leave the power disconnected from the airport and seaport to avoid plane/boat crashes. This also means that you can skip having fire departments if you choose since you won't need them.

I don't think there's any easy way to take screenshots unless you're running an emulator, so we'll have to do this in the honor system unless people feel like taking photos of their monitor/tv using a digital camera in a dark room with no flash and a long exposure (anyone else getting Atari 2600 Activision patch flashbacks?).

**** How to do the money trick ****
1. Spend all of your money and make sure auto budget is off.
2. Lower your taxes to 0%, and lower your coverage of your Police, Fire, and Transit to 0% as well.
3. When the annual income report appears, hold the L Button down, and "Go With The Figure"
4. Still holding the L Button down, go into the Information Menu, and select TAX.
5. Still holding the L Button down, you should now increase Police, Fire, and Transit 6. funds to 100%, and then "Go With The Figures."
6. Upon exiting, release the L Button, and if you followed the steps correctly, you will now have $999,999 instead of $000,000!
