That is no longer the proper command for HLSL. I suspect the preset you are using might be using the outdated syntax.

Check HLSL.txt in your DOCS folder or examine output from "mame -showusage":

defocus [xval,yval]
This defines the overall defocus radius for the three post-converged beams. Values allowed range from 0.0 to 32.0.

You also might need to use -hlsl_ini_write to save a "setname.ini" file to your HLSL file to make sure all your entries are correct.
