Well, you know how many shootings by unstable civilians are in Mexico? basically none. The shootings come usually from criminals or police, not from anyone able to buy firearms. Most controversial cases are high school kids bringing his dad's 9mm caliber pistol to school (notice I didn't say assault rifles or shotguns) injuring (notice I didn't say killing) two classmates. There's also other cases where these kids work for criminals and act as hitmen, but again not an average Joe with easy access to firearms. And these cases count for 1 in every 100 or so in USA.
Problem is even with a sudden gun control to civilians, there are so many firearms in civilian's hands it's now impossible to restrict the access. But hey, you can always buy a bigger firearm "to be safe" and increase the chain. You have no escape and sadly it's not your fault anymore either.
