It was a backhanded way of backhanding you... Basically saying you're too unmasculine to appeal to women, but you're not gay... Which is too bad because that's your best shot.
See, it half sounded like a compliment, but now she's got you defending your sexual orientation... Which can't be a good start in any situation.
A good response woyld have been "and too bad you're not straight, that would have been your strong suit."
Similarly backhanded backhand... Let her now convince you of HER sexual orientation... I can imagine a scenario where things could improve from there... Or at least you walk away not looking completely imasculated.
