I bought a '73 VW bug back in the 80's. Once in a while, it would get starved for gas then die. After a short time it would run OK again. Finally a big chunk of rusty goop ended up in the fuel filter. After that, I changed the fuel filter and it ran fine from then on. I kinda wish i wouldn't have sold it. Parts for those cars were so cheap. I think fuel filters were about $2, compared to what $12 - $15 and up for newer cars.
