Strikers 1945 region change.

Hi y'all,
I'm trying to convert my Strikers 1945 to the Japanese version and I've so far tried s1945j and s1945jn without success. Demo mode is fine but the game seizes or resets at start after coin up.
The main reason is that the freeplay option doesn't work and the coin mech in the s1945 cab is dickier than Orc's ticker.
I haven't yet tried the unprotected set and my version doesn't romident.
Anyone any ideas apart from the glaringly obvious?
