The local(ish) shitty zoo used to have a pit for snakes. It was not used for anything other than keeping the snakes away from the people.
Last time I saw it was more than half my life ago, so I can't describe it well. Apparently they do have occasional "snake handling" demonstrations now. The web site is poorly planned and incomplete.
