I'm pretty sure the Christmas cone is already in the code, checking system date is not phoning home. It's not like the program runs an underground service at start up. Unlike iTunes which owning an iPod or not, runs iPodService.exe without asking anyway. QuickTime does the same with qttask.exe. I'm not sure if current versions still do, but I see it a lot on my client's computers. Let's not forget the Apple Update software. I'm an advanced user so I know how to disable those annoying things, but for me the most I can avoid installing those things the better. Enough I have with Adobe software checking for updates at start up, I let that slide because unlike QuickTime, Flash Player is necessary to navigate through Internet.
Not the intention of Gatinho, but other users might stop assuming we all own Macs to look cool. On the other hand, now I know how a Linux/Mac user feels like when you slap them a WMV file on the face.
There's a program I like to check for whatever URL software loves to visit, then I can disable the software or edit the HOST file if I feel like I should do it. Google for "URL Snooper".
