Actually, you can 'complete' a slot machine game, just make sure you've gone through every single winning combination, from the minimum prize right up to jackpot (doesn't matter what the bet multiplier or number of paylines selected is, since it would literally take decades to get every single win on each and every payline on bet 1, then with a bet of 2, 3, 4, 5 etc).
If a game doubles the win with a wild (like Queen of the Nile, not working yet in MAME though), you have to go through each combination again until both non-wild wins and wild wins have been crossed off. Scatter prizes also count, so you have to get each combination of those (e.g. 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 on screen, if they count as wins for a certain amount; most games don't pay for 1 scatter however)
If the free game feature has a set multiplier (like Queen of the Nile where it is x3, or x6 with the wild Cleopatra) or multiple types (like Indian Dreaming; the free game wilds are x3, x5, or when both x3/x5 symbols substitute for the same win they count as x15), you then have to get every win with the bonus multiplier(s) during the free games.
Off-topic, five 'Indian Chiefs' x15 on a full bet of 500 credits (20 bet x 25 credits for the 243 ways play) is considered jackpot on this game (however, most people consider THE jackpot as being one specific combination: It is possible to have 'double' Indian Chief/wilds on the same reels in reels 2 and 4 at the same time, effectively having a x24 Indian Chief win in the free games - x3, x5, x15 and x1 all on the one spin - since the x3 and x5 wilds have an Indian Chief symbol two spots up or down from the wild, if it lands in the right position). You can also get the same win playing 81 ways (reels 1-4), which in this example would cost 300 credits since the 81 way bet is only 15 credits instead of 25 (and multiplied by 20 for the max bet). However, a 5 of a kind win on 81 way play is only possible if the fifth symbol is in the middle position of the last reel.
If there's a bonus prize in the feature, every single bonus amount has to be won as well to consider completing the game. For example, 3 Bags Full [3bagflvt, 3bagflnz] has bonus bags of 40, 50, 60, 70 and 100 credits, and if 3 matching amounts are selected on the bonus, the player can pick a larger bonus bag containing an even higher amount, which also varies. On Autumn Moon [autmoon], the game itself has bonus symbols (instead of a second screen) which have to line up left to right on a line in the first 3, 4 or 5 reels. There are various prizes up to 1000 credits on the reels. On Top Gear, you would have to enter all five places during the drag race to win the different bonus amounts. On Gone Troppo and Caribbean Gold II (MAME's set is missing 2 graphics ROMs unfortunately), each bonus selection also has different amounts.
