Totally agree, theory is important. Even when the so called "we stepped the moon" are unable to set a simple camp over a natural satellite (but plan to launch a man on Mars), it will be possible for future generations to leave this planet for new horizons.
And yes, they need to justify their research with the same headline every six months, otherwise they won't get any more funds. Space research are really long term extensive (and expensive) projects.
I'm not taking down the efforts NASA or any other organization are doing for space research (quite the contrary). I'm just saying anything "exciting" they could say it will really be in decades, centuries or even millenniums.
