don't get me wrong, but you seem to have been somewhere else for 10 years
MESS had "working" support for C64, ZX81 and Apple ][, among the others, already back in 2001

Anyway, many computer drivers have been broken for years (e.g. the c64) and this contributed to the very bad reputation that has characterized MESS in the early 2000s (and that we are still fighting to get free from)
Starting from 2006-2008, however, MESS has become better and better in basically all supported systems (including c64, which is currently working in his full magnificence ) and I suggest you to give it a try, given that most options are shared with MAME (except for the basic syntax which is
mess *system* -cart /path/to/the/software/item [1]
instead of mame *game* ), including HLSL filters or GLSL ones, depending on your OS.
[1] replace -cart with -cass or -flop, where suitable, or with -listmedia to know the options supported for each system
