Yeah. The ultimate judge of a game these days is playing it at CAX, or one of the few good arcades still around (e.g. Ground Control).
That said, I look for different things in gaming now than I did when I was 8 years old. I didn't "get" Tempest then; I very much do now. So I think his post has merit.
