One way to work out the logic here is that all the other kids hate this kid who likes showing off to girls so he can... well, I won't go there. But anyway, he could've injured or killed someone, and if he did he would be in jail for it. Had you not notified the authorities he wouldn't have been stopped for making a mistake (not 'possibly' making a mistake, since it would eventually happened). So it can be deduced that since you helped this kid, and kids are angry at you for it - then they don't like this kid, or have something against him.

I wonder what the "charges" would've been if you had pressed charges? Because he got enough charges just from breaking the law in other areas.

Obviously you did the brat a favor. But at the time you didn't know it was him... Not that that would make a difference. He was still being a royal class douche bag/epic prick! (take your pick). What were you supposed to do when they brought you to identify the vehicle?... Lie and say "Oh, No. Sorry that's not him officers. You got the wrong punk."...?

I guess if you did lie then that would make you a "Cool" dad.

The juvenile mind obviously can't weight or discern one outcome against another.
He either hurts somebody, or doesn't hurt somebody and thinks he can do it again. OR
He get's caught and loses his driving privileges. Nobody gets hurt that way.

Hmm... Loss of life or limb, or loss of driving privileges...
