We can keep taking take stabs in the dark if you don't specify exactly what MAME is saying, what precisely is your locations of data and rompath value as well as what version you are using and what game (be specific) you are trying to run.

Ok, from the beginning. I'm assuming you don't know how to use a prompt, so forgive me is this is insulting :P (enter) = Enter Key

What version of MAME are you using and is it the command-line driven MAME or is it MAMEUI?

Open a command prompt (all windows versions have a shortcut to create one), or START -> RUN -> cmd (enter)

Navigate to your MAME folder. You'll need to:
CD (location on disk where MAME is)
If your Windows drive is not the same as where MAME is, type the drive letter in the prompt (d:, e:, f:.. and so on)

Example -
e: (enter)
CD e:\emulator\arcade\mame (enter)

Then, when you see you are in the same folder, type:
mame -showusage | find "rompath" (enter)
Where is your rompath set?

Paste exactly what it says when you attempt to run the CHD you say should work with:
mame (setname) (enter)

From there, maybe someone can help you.
