boot the game. press test (F2), then hold service credit (9) and then tap reset (F3). The control config menu will appear and the controls will be centered. Press test again and the game will come up.
This is the common method to initialize almost all of the Namco games that have analog controls.
On the real machine the controls should be centered when not touched and this will re-center the pot values. In MAME it doesn't work as expected.
First you need to set the analog controls to the mouse X axis and the swing left to [CURSOR LEFT] and swing right to [CURSOR RIGHT]. Then center the mouse pointer on screen (running MAME in a window) and then do the above initialize procedure. Move the mouse sideways and the numbers on the initialize screen will change. It kind of works but the values get messed up after a while and moving left or right ends up moving in the opposite direction. You'll also need to be ambidextrous the play it on the keyboard + mouse.
IMO none of the Namco Super System 22 games work that well anyway to even bother playing them in MAME with the exception of Prop Cycle and maybe Time Crisis. In any case you'd better have a F-A-S-T pc (a C2D 3.33GHz allows 30FPS) otherwise you'll be playing at <10FPS
