The Theremin is a pure analog synthesis device build with high frequency oscillators, frequency dividers, frequency to voltage converters and voltage controlled amplifiers. Such a setup is not common at all. Most analog synths (Moog et al) are analog subtractive processes which are not the same thing at all. Besides which, analog synths are out of style these days, having been largely pushed aside by digital synths, and synths in general aren't that common. Most of the devices on the market are ROMplers, which aren't a true synth at all.
