No it isn't. The Mellotron is the first "sample based" keyboard. It uses reels of tape loops with one for each note on the keyboard. When you strike a note, a playback head makes contact with the tape.
Changing the sound requires changing the tape. The cartridges are huge and some have more than one sound on them.
