Yes, you must press the stick away from Kong just after you begin each jump to score the points. If you are a pixel from Kong's foot, you need only jump.
Once you've finished the third rivet board, the BONUS counter seems to run faster than you can score the 100 pts, so I just try to finish the stage quickly.
