I attribute this to societies loss/distorted sense of pride. Nobody cares about "Being" the best they can be, all they care about is "Having" the best they can have.
Personally I could take the same amount of pride from a floor well mopped that I could from designing the next space shuttle. I'd do either for the same amount of money if I loved the work, and I know I'll love any work that I put my best into.
Maybe I'm old fashion, maybe I'm crazy. Either way, the world can get off my self maintained lawn.
