The funny thing with Amidar is when it utilized samples, the 'default' volume settings were much lower for the background music. I would turn up the background music volume setting(s) to 2-3x the default (AY-3-8910A #1.0-1.2 slider adjustments).
I just recently fired the game up, as I had not played it under MAME since it went to emulated discrete sound, and was pleasantly surprised at how well the background music volume is 'set' and balanced with the game's other effects.
Going to the slider options to see what sound adjustments can be made, I noticed all sound is set with one 'discrete sound' volume control. So your only option is to change all effects at once.
For me, Amidar sounds great as is, as I believe the current background music volume is at the right 'setting' now, which is also much louder than the default setting when it relied on sound samples.
However, I believe a great feature, if ever implemented for cases such as this or in the case of Mario Bros. (walking effect), is seperate volume control settings. I know, it's much easier said than done. Maybe somewhere down the road though it will be implemented.
Heck, anything is possible...lol. I remember waiting what felt like forever for Mr. Do's Castle "Communication Error" to be fixed from the very first time it was added to MAME back in version 0.10-0.12. It took awhile, but I believe somewhere around 0.24-0.26 it was finally fixed and the game playable.
