Happened to me in 2 out of 3 apartments.
First apartment, bottom floor, walked into the bathroom one day, flipped the light on and noticed that it looked weird, dim and kind of yellowish. Looked up and realized that the light fixture was filled with water, like a fishbowl. Then I noticed the condition of the walls. It was just a water leak, who knows how many stories above, but in a hundred-year old building, the water picks up who knows what as it runs down the stack. It ends up looking like caramel running down the walls.
Last apartment, the guy above me had a dishwasher line break and got my kitchen good and wet. Not as messy as the first one, but I still have water running down the light fixture and down the wall behind the cabinets. I swear there were mold problems after that, but I couldn't get the cheapass landlord to do anything about it. I ended up just GTFO as soon as I could.
Ugh, renting... never again if I can help it.
