Since I did this myself.
Saw an item, had only 3 bids, was dirt cheap.
I put in a maximim bid. A pop-up said I am the highest bidder, but reserve not yet met, had an option to increase my maximum bid. My listed current bid was only $2 more than the bid I saw when I started, not my maximum bid.
So I put in another higher maximum bid (thinking that's what ebay meant when they said reserve not met). Again, said I won but reserve not met.
So again... I put in another higher maximum bid... and again said reserve not met.
Then I said screw it. Out of curiousity, I looked at the bid history. I'm now listed there three times, same low price of only $2 more than the bid I saw when it started. Ebay's automated bidding thingy will only increase your bid by a couple dollars to beat out the last guy... why it doesn't jump up to the reserve I dunno. It also lists each increased maximum as a separate bid, even though they all list at the same price. Stupid defect of ebay.
Edit:
I'll be curious when the bidding ends if I "win", and at what price... my highest maximum bid, or the lowest winning bid that beats the unknown reserve.
