On this topic, i just found out 3 mins ago what caused my Portable Firefox to increasingly allocate memory and put a constant CPU load of around 49-51% (besides crashing after half, maybe 1 hour at the latest):
AVG that's installed on this machine (i have no control over it) installed an FF addon ("AVG Safe Search" - woohooo, link checking!) which is the cause. Found out while analyzing the FF process with SysInternals ProcessExplorer and it's ability to analyze threads. I said it, on-demand/installable scanners are uttermost CRAP. I cannot even uninstall the addon (at last easily), only disable it.
