it depends. zipped files are loaded by crc (relying on the checksum in the zip header, and ignoring filenames), but if you store uncompressed files in subfolders of the rompath, e.g. pacman.zip files in
roms/pacman/
then MAME allows to load any file as long as it has the correct filename (a warning is printed on the prompt/shell if CRC mismatches, but emulation starts anyway)
