For what it's worth, the "Installing The SunOS" (4.1) manual over on bitsavers [1] has this to say about the 'c partition' on page 26:
Quote: The c Partition
Every disk drive used with the SunOS operating system must, by convention, have a c partition defined. This partition is used by the operating system to reference the entire disk. It is defined automatically by Sun's format (88) and suninstall (8) programs and should not be altered.
