How to get crosshair working in current Mame

Hi all,
I'm trying to play Carnevil using current Mame. I installed fresh new directory and everything. I cannot get the crosshair to show up for aiming. It seems to be stuck in the upper left hand corner and won't move. Any suggestions would be appreciated
