Oh damn,
Did no arcade machines/games have midi music?

Have I also misread this;
Mame 0.60
- osd_opl_control() and osd_opl_write() removed; direct access to the SoundBlaster OPL chip is no longer useful.

Maybe this was just an idea that wasn't fully completed and then was found to be not of use or required and so removed?

Maybe this is as close as I get?
