Good ideas guys, for the longest time I thought Exerion might be it, but it doesn't have the scrolling I remember. Mirax does look like the scrolling I remember, but I'm not sure it is the game I'm thinking of. Something like a cross between exerion and mirax. I was 12 at the time so perhaps my memory is at fault too...
