One thing that I believe mame did that would be hard to track and or prove is bring people into the computer world thru both programming and to the internet.

I, for one, did some internet surfing but very limited, until I found mame (like mame .5 1998?)

Once I figured out how to set it up and use it (another mame attribute, learning how to run programs that wasn't point and click) then I was hooked to the internet. Spending 30 minutes just about every night searching for updates, roms, and best of all rumors of the next possible release.

Add to this the number of websites that came into being just to feed the clamor over mame. How much bandwidth did mame absorb over its first 5 yrs compared to other interests? Except porn I would imagine mame is up there.

It also created a close community with others reaching out to help both the programmers and the users that I have marveled at for yrs. I would imagine that the if every name was listed that contributed to mame in one way or another that the list would be staggering.

I remember knowing nothing on programming I started down that rabbit hole with both feet and my most fun was fitting the golden tee golf games into mame with me and Derrick passing emails back and forth with code as we figured out different things to get them working, figuring out the dip switches (which got added to mame). It was fun, it was a learning experience and I got to share time with a fellow mamer! I remember a few rumors got out and me and Derrick had people offering money for our info which we didn't take.

Once the games were officially added it was cool to see that we hadn't been to far off the mark with our own hacked together code.

Mame is/did more then play games, it brought people together, it created websites. It sucked huge amounts of bandwidth, absorbed large amounts of time, created communities, created friends and above all created and brought back memories.

One of my greatest payoffs was watching my young kids play my mame cabinet, creating memories for both them and me. Mame allowed me to share my memories with them and create new memories with them.

So I do thank you all that have given much of your valuable time to this project, you might only remember all of those who bitch, beg, complain about certain things mame, there are a whole lot who remain silent who are greatly appreciative to your efforts....and the memories you've help create for them....

Only here to annoy...
