having history and hiscore dat issues. should be an easy fix, but i can't figure it out....

having trouble with the history and hiscore dat files. i'm not sure what i'm doing wrong. I haven't updated mame in about 10 versions, so something may have changed that i'm missing. i'm not sure, I just can't get them to work. I placed them in the mame folder just as I used to. it worked fine back then. I've done the same thing now, but it doesn't work. someone mentioned to me that I place them in the "plugins" folder. still no dice. if anyone has any answers or suggestions at all, it would be much appreciated. thanks in advance!
