If I remember correctly, the 6 player version was only released as a dedicated cabinet. Each character had their own coin slot and controls. In MAME you would coin up which ever character you want to play and use the associated buttons. To find out what keys are mapped for each player, press Tab and select Input This Game and it will show you.

As for the 4 player on two screens, I don't know.
