That is how the original machine worked. Nearly all the old hi-lo shifters had one switch in them. Think of it as a high gear button. If you weren't in high, the game defaulted to lo.

The toggle that has been present in MAME for a long time is not original behavior. While it may benefit those playing with a gamepad or keyboard, it prevents anyone from using a real shifter and IMO goes against the MAME philosophy of accurately representing the hardware.

The option to turn off the toggle by modifying the cfg file was added in v.151 and is much appreciated by those of us with shifters. The default is still the toggle though, so it should make no difference to people unaware of the option.

I'm guessing you were using old cfg files with the newer versions.

I'm not against having some hacks to make the games more playable with various controls, just not at the expense of it no longer working with original controls.

I'd still like to see an option someday to map separate latching buttons to hi and low so people with paddle or sequential shifters can have an optimal experience too.
