I like to call it "public source code grouped by ego", if only they knock off the "my distro will be better than yours" attitude and work together in only a pair of distros (one for servers and one for home users), they would stand a chance for increasing marketshare. While this happens, enjoy the incompatibilities and bugs every distro has to offer.
