Performance Regression
#398300 - 04/13/24 12:46 AM

Hi everyone. Has there been any sort of recent changes to the drivers for games like Area 51, Cruisin USA, SFRush etc?

I upgraded recently from 0.258 to 0.264. My rig now struggles with keeping 100% speed with these games. Especially Area 51. It is constantly fluctuating between 90-100% causing sound stuttering etc. Previously ran at 100% and unthrottled 150-160%. Now even un throttling the games barely sits over 103%. My cpu is not taxed at all either, only at 16% utilization.

I7 8700k
16G Ram
4060TI
Win 11 x64 Proffesional.

Doesn't appear to be an appreciable drop in my benches for two of those drivers (seattle and midvunit):

There was a dip in Area51 when I ran it just now:
0.258:
mame area51 -bench 90
Average speed: 242.94% (89 seconds)

0.264:
mame area51 -bench 90
Average speed: 218.72% (89 seconds)

Any changes in your video/sync settings?

No, no changes at all. I’m baffled to be honest.

Did you upgrade everything in the dist package, not just the .exe but including all the bgfx etc. support files?

You could try narrowing it down with a clean install and just those roms/CHDs and a fresh mame.ini, etc. Try different -video modes to see what works best.

Hi,

I did and it still was occurring.

I'm not sure what's going on but if I run one of the clones of Area 51?

Zero Issues. Runs without a hitch.

If I run the parent, utilizing Groovymame's slider save function I have to down clock the main CPU to around 60% to get the game to stay at 100% - if not it it hovers between 90-100%.

Likely means that the config files from older version of MAME were not deleted first before running newer version release of MAME because it appears that an alternate clone version of Area 51 had not yet been run before which means the parent romset’s old config files are still there in the folder and must be deleted first before running the newer release of MAME.

After all the old config files are removed, then test the other games to see what happens.
