Steering wheel problem

I have the latest version of Mame installed on my pc. I have purchased a thrustmaster steering wheel to play driving games on mame. However when I connect to a usb port and then try to load any game , the game does not load. The loading screen briefly shows for about a second but then goes back to the mame game list. When i disconnect the steering wheel all games load fine.
Can somebody please advise

Just curious: does the wheel function correctly with other programs on Windows ? (in order to tell if it's mame specific or not).
Also: do you know how the wheel interfaces with Windows ? (DirectX [cant recall the specific name, sorry], or if it presents itself as a keyboard, or a mouse ?
