Galaxian, namco set 1 - lack of fluidity in horizontal movement
#397603 - 12/30/23 03:28 PM

Hello ! good morning

I have noticed that when the enemy ships move from side to side (especially the two in the first row, yellow, red and blue, when they are in their initial position), the movement is not fluid, you can see like "small jumps"...

In the other rows it is not noticeable as much or almost at all.

With the PC equipment I have, the movement should be fluid, I didn't expect these behaviour, to be honest.

I don't know if it's a limitation in the emulation of this game itself, but as far as I remember as a child I didn't notice this on the original machine... it was all magic... Now it has become an obsession about being able to play it properly...

I've tried a little bit of everything: Overclocking my PC's CPU and GPU (even though there should be "more than enough" powerhorses to render an emulated game from this era), applying HLSL filters, removing them, changing the rendering between the various modes (bgfx, gdi, opengl), activate or deactivate vsync, lower the native resolution of my monitor, wait to synchronize in the game's video options... I don't know how many options I've tried really..., and the movement 'little jumps' is always noticeable.

I have also tried previous versions of mame other than the current one as of today, and the same thing happens in every other version.

My Windows 11 PC specs:

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X 8-Core Processor, 32 GB DDR4 3200MHz
Sapphire Pulse AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT 12GB
BenQ G2400W 60Hz Monitor

Thank you very much in advance for reading this post, and I hope you can clarify these doubts for me.

All the best !

Do you have a VRR/Freesync/Gsync setup w/ card and monitor? That should get you tear/judder free playback. Galaxian runs at 60.606061 Hz.

It's hardware. You buy it. Google is a thing.

Ok.

As I said in my first post, I have an old Benq G2400W monitor.

It does not have VRR capabilities
It does not have compatibility with FreeSync
It does not have compatibility with Gsync

But I think it must be a way to manually configure it to avoid that undesired effect of screen tearing

Even Galaxian runs smoother in my Xiaomi MI MIX 2 phone !

Thanks again

To see what the OP might be talking about, I tried this with mame 0.261.

When the aliens in the rows move from left to right, it does indeed seem like they are not moving smoothly (I cannot find the right word for it, but the term 'stop-motion animation' comes to mind). When they dive down to you though, that does seem smooth. To me it seems like that's the behavior of the original hardware though, and the developers just didn't (or couldn't) make the animation just as smooth when the aliens move from left to right in their rows. On the other hand, I might just be seeing things.

For what it's worth: both my GPU (GeForce GTX 1650) and my monitor (Asus ROG Swift PG278Q) have G-Sync. (and again, I don't think it's a tearing issue, just the way the original was designed).

If it really is 'tearing' because of the hardware, then there is no magic setting you can make in the software to improve things.

Perhaps (the screen of) your Xiaomi MI MIX 2 phone (from 2017) simply has better specifications than your BenQ G2400W 60Hz Monitor (from 2008).

Could partial updates have anything to do with this?
I have a G-Sync monitor and I see the tearing/juddering (if that's what it is) on the top row yellow aliens. Press F11 and partial updates are all over the place. However loading hunchback on galaxian hardware for example, there is no partial updates message.
