Atari 2600 joystick USB suggestions
#396894 - 08/22/23 08:58 PM

Anyone have suggestions for a USB Atari 2600 joystick? Is the Retrolink Classic the closest?

Laugh, I didn't say I wanted to play A2600 games with the joystick. ;-)

Like the other thread here I've been playing Pacman (free range, no patterns) a lot lately and rage out when I get a misdirection w/ all my controllers. These joysticks seem like the quickest / cheapest way to get a 4-way joystick into the mix.

Why can't MAME simply disable the other inputs with a toggle in the UI so you have 4-way on a per-game or set basis that a user has full control over?

Would seem to make more sense then seeking out other hardware.

Looks like we can try it w/ the -joymap option, lacking a pure hardware solution:

-joymap s8.4s8.44s8.4445

MAME does suppress diagonals for games that expect a four-way joystick. However, you’re still not going to get that snappy, tactile transition between horizontal and vertical if you don’t have a real four-way joystick. It just isn’t the same.

Just to follow up on this.
Atari is going to be re-introducing a replica CX40, it's up for pre-sale:
https://atari.com/products/cx40-joystick

In the meantime I opted for a 2600 II daptor:
http://2600-daptor.com/

and an OEM stick from eBAY. We'll see how the new replica stacks up to the original in November.

Vas, does the -joymap I posted above work in addition to the built-in suppression you're talking about or is it redundant for four way games like pacman. Do I get anything out of the switch in this case?

AFAIK the Atari 2600 joystick is NOT a 4 way stick. A 4 way stick has either a restrictor inside or is built in such a way, that you can not press two directions (by accident or in any other way). The Atari 2600 is NOT built like that. This joystick can do diagonal directions, making it a 8-way joystick.

Correct, the Atari 2600 was designed for and used 8-way joysticks.

-joymap only applies when converting analog joystick inputs for games that use digital joysticks. You aren’t actually using an analog joystick for games that used a 4-way digital joystick, are you?

I sometimes attempt to use the left thumb stick on an Xbox Elite 2 to see how it does in pacman vs the dpad. I guess that would be a use case for the -joymap in this scenario.
