... preferably a MAME dev:
wemr97 and I have tried without success to set up a steering wheel for Speed Freak and were wondering if any of you had some input? It seems the wheel is set in the driver to autocenter every time it's turned, but we can't figure out any rhyme or reason to the other 15 positions and it moves too fast to eyeball it. I can't even effectively play this game with a mouse without immediately crashing so it might be a waste of time anyway.
Any input would help.

Oh it’s that PORT_RESET crap. Basically, don’t even bother trying until it’s refactored to get rid of PORT_RESET. It’s been marked deprecated, and will eventually be removed from all drivers, but realistically it will still be quite a while before that’s completed.
