Holy shit! Gamshara is emulated in 0.254! I never thought I'd see the day. I hope this isn't an April fools joke.

*EDIT It's not an April Fools joke. Thanks WindyFairy! You're awesome!

Re: Happy 1 April, but not for Sega Model 2 fans back in 2002 new [Re: Vas Crabb]

* bringing up the good times memory from 2002 from old MAME.net days *

copy of old post for the new batch generation of visitors here.

Re: Model 2 WIP - extra credits

https://www.mameworld.info/ubbthreads/sh...part=1&vc=1

for any of the long time emulation followers that remember the 2002 April Fools joke that Gridle had pulled with Model 2 wip update on old MAME.net web site.

For those that had never visited old MAME.net web site, the site maintainer "Santeri S. / Gridle" would type up MAME wip moments so users could see what was completed over a few days and maybe what to expect in a future MAME release. For April Fools day in 2001 Gridle did a light-hearted wip update that made fun of MAMEdevs, but it was clever and well done without getting users upset.

For April Fools day MAME wip update in 2002, Gridle had posted a Model 2 emulation update that showed 'doctored' images of Model 2 games running in MAME. The chat forums were filled with lots of over-excited fans waiting to try Model 2 emulation in a future release of MAME. When it was discovered later in the day that it was an April Fools prank by Gridle, there were several upset "kidz" that were dismayed that it was a joke by Gridle. A few posted swearing so the forum had to be cleaned up with a few posts having to be deleted.

Model 2 games were not emulated until another few more years had passed...maybe around 2004 or 2005 iirc.

I thought it was a clever April Fools stunt that Gridle pulled in 2002, but not a surprise that some users were to react like that regarding the 2002 April Fools prank of Model 2 being emulated because in 2001 when CPS-2 was first emulated by using XOR files created by Razoola there was huge excitment because an emulator "finalburn" was running some of the CPS-2 games. When the author (Dave) decided to stop doing any more supporting of CPS-2 games, the "kidz" just went nuts with the usual "internet-type" threats on Dave and any others involved with emulator "finalburn" back around spring 2001.

For those that were not there then, MAME was DOS based then before the main development switched to Windows, the versions were still using the b extension for Beta until a full release would appear, the source code updates were a guess to the public while those on MAMEdev list probably had a better guess of what might be in final release version. The great Sega rewrite with sarcasm understanding of the rewrite to maybe be completed in 2006. Asteroid analog audio sounds that took a nosedive regression until Derrick fixed the analog audio in 2005. Tons of stuff not yet emulated. And lots not even imagined or expected back in 2002. Over 20 years gone by while it seems no more than 5 or 10 years ago.

I was disappointed myself in not saving Gridle’s April Fools 2002 WIP prank. And same with PacDude’s infamous flame thread from September 2000 in which arguments between users in that same thread went on for 2 to 3 weeks on old MAME.net forum. It had to do with adult theme images that Gridle posted on WIP posts on old MAME. Net site back in the days. And then the flame thread included complaints about mahjong games shouldn’t be supported in MAME then. It was an absurd thread that could have been a guest on American tv show Jerry Springer back then with fists flying and expletives all about.

Seeing other Namco progress, April is probably Namco awareness month.

Anything cool happened since then?

In case you’re new, gregf is well-known for posting long-winded rambling replies that have very little to do with the thread he’s replying to. He brings up the same things over and over again. You can just ignore him.

For those unfamiliar with Taiko no Tatsujin game series, visit NAMCO SYSTEM 10 page on Sixtoe’s web site.

btw: Many years earlier, there was a thread about how would emulation support unique input devices that are a part of a coinop cab such as Taiko no Tatsujin. One of the responses was console game manufacturers would probably have some product already in the market for the console customers in case a popular coinop product was marketed for console systems long before some coinop game version is ever emulated. Whoever typed that reply many years earlier had predicted the scenario correctly many years earlier. Now about handling that Beach Head 2000 coinop game and its odd looking VR helmets for playing that game…..

System 10: Gamshara fans can rejoice new [Re: Vas Crabb]
#396087 - 04/26/23 09:30 PM

Thanks to Bill ( bravo Bill D. ) for the pcb work of getting proper data from a ROM or two
that the game is now playable. Either in .254 or future .255 release, but it is already in
source code for those that compile their own builds.

The older version of Gamshara is already playable in 0.254 anyway.

Thankfully the issue was only rom related, newer version rom set, rather than a decryption issue and both sets will be playable. Hopefully other games not yet emulated will have somewhat easier decryption challenges unlike Point Blank 3.

Haze’s comment in description

The decrypted code was extracted from a Point Blank 3 PCB, thanks to the work of Windy Fairy (and Guru running Windy's test code) This allows the game to run in MAME, although the encryption still hasn't been figured out the proper way, as it's significantly more complex than other Namco System 10 games.

The work involved from Windy Fairy and Guru of what the effort itook to be able to watch attract mode of the two games.

Gunbalina (Japan, GNN1 Ver.A)

Added decrypted Point Blank 3 program code.

Both games run, but will still have MACHINE_UNEMULATED_PROTECTION
until particular protection is figured out.

Somewhat reminds me of Razoola’s CPS-2 XOR files method that was used for being able to run various CPS-2 games for a few years until a solution was achieved for decryption of CPS-2 hardware back in Spring 2007.
