What is the best light gun to get for MAME these days? I current have a set of Aimtrak guns but it seems like this bug is never getting fixed.

I don't mean to be inconsiderate, but it looks like the problem is with you instead of the gun or the game. Case in point...I use a "derivative" of the Aimtrak, and have ZERO issues with most gun games. That is because I use a 4:3 monitor. If you are using a widescreen monitor, consider non-stretching resolutions and play the game in the original format. I understand that the black bars may be distracting, but that was the original format of the game and how the original software calibrated the guns. Set the game in original screen mode and calibrate using the aspect ratio instead of the wide screen, and all should work. My point is that if the original game worked in a specific resolution, then trying to add hacks to make it work in other resolutions is just that...a hack.

I believe I'm already trying to do what you are suggesting. I run MAME in 3840 x 2160 and let MAME generate black borders on the side. Are you saying to use an actual 4:3 resolution like 2880 x 2160 instead?
What derivative are you using? I have guns from here. https://www.arcadeguns.com/

Correct on the 4:3 resolution. And, yes, I am using a variant from arcadeguns. Since I am using a CRT, I am running in a 1024 x 768 resolution (basically 960 x 720 up-ressed using appropriate GPU drivers), which are in 4:3 aspect ratios. If you change your resolution to a 4:3 aspect ratio, it will work. Otherwise, you will need to compensate for the 4:3 aspect ratio when calibrating the guns. For this, you can generate a "white-box" jpg picture in a 4:3 aspect ratio, and calibrate the guns against this in the OS before running the game. I know...a little extra work, but because the game is designed to run in a certain aspect ratio, asking the dev team to add "hacks" to run in other aspect ratios only introduces complaints that may be ignored down the road.

Thanks. I guess I can use that as a work around with MAME but wouldn't I have to recalibrate then for my other emulators and PC games? All my other emulators work fine when pillar boxed at 3840 x 2160.

From what I read, gun4ir has a software work around for the 16:9 MAME issue.

I 3d printed a "gun" that fits a Wii Controller using this file (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3650953). If you don't have a 3d printer, most local libraries offer ultra-cheap printing. Add a cheap lightbar as a sensor ($9), and I'm able to reliably play Duck Hunt, Hogan's Alley, Jurassic Park, etc.

I looked into using Wiimotes a while ago. I found them too inaccurate for true light gun games. For giant analog sick games like T2, they weren't bad.

Agreed. Though I never thought original arcade light guns were all that accurate in the first place. So in my case, a not-so-accurate gun feels.....right. LOL.

You do not even notice it after a while. You think of it as a bezel. Well worth the $$$
