What could be a possible workaround for Ikari warriors controls?

or any other game with rotary controls? I currently use a cabinet and depsite having a spinner and a trackball, those are not suitable ways to play it, and the 8 ways joystick hack just isn't good enough because the game requires you to strafe at some point.
Could be possible to assign a key to a direction+shooting, so that everytime i press a button i know that it will shoot right, when i press the button next to it will shoot left etc?

Probably difficult on a cabinet without a rotary joystick, but if you play with a gamepad, there are a couple of workable approaches. Use the left stick or D-pad for movement. Then either use face buttons for shot/grenade and left/right shoulder buttons to rotate, or use right stick to rotate and shoulder/trigger buttons for shot/grenade.

Only slightly related, but I never played this at the arcade as a kid and only knew the commodore c64 version, which (obviously) uses a 8-way joystick, with which I never experienced any problems during gameplay as far as I can remember. I only found out years later that the original arcade version had rotary controls, to which I reacted when I first found out about them: the WHAT now ? lol.

If I remember correctly, someone was going to make a repro. For some reason, I want to say it was Glen from Glen's Retro Show, but I do not remember.

20 years ago I modded a Happ 8-way joystick into a rotary. Using the guts out of an old ball mouse, I bolted the encoder wheel to the bottom of the joystick and then rigged up the sensor so that it would move with the motion of the joystick but not rotate. It was kinda janky but it worked!

Thanks, I tried that approach but the rotation is way too fast or to slow (using shoulder buttons). Maybe there is a "sweet spot" ?
