MAME turns 25 years old today!
#393225 - 02/06/22 01:47 AM Attachment: mame25.jpg 60 KB (0 downloads)

In case you missed the news: MAME turns 25 years old today!

On December 24, 1996, developer Nicola Salmoria began working on single arcade hardware emulators such as MultiPac. Nicola merged his emulators together under a single unified framework and on February 5th 1997, he released MAME 0.1.

Anniversary tweet here:
https://twitter.com/mamedev_org/status/1490099597443833869

For the curious, you can find MAME 0.1 (only for use in MS-DOS and Windows 95/98 command prompts, and we no longer provide support) at the bottom of our Previous Releases page here: https://mamedev.org/oldrel.html
and the release documentation is here: https://www.mamedev.org/releases/readme_01.txt

I've been following MAME since 1998 and many emulators have come and gone since then. I continue to be amazed (and gratefully pleased) how MAME marches forward and continues to be developed. There have also been quite a lot of developers that have come and gone. I would love to see a "where are they now" with some of the past MAME developers. I'm also amazed how long some of the developers have been around (arbee and a few others come to mind). I'm not taking anything away from any developers, just taking a trip down memory lane.

Huge THANKS to all of the developers that continue to make MAME the awesome emulator it is today!

Yes been following MAME since its inception. Essential software on any new machine I put together. And it's been exciting to watch it evolve. A quarter century!

https://www.mamedev.org/?p=439

When we prepared a list of credited contributors for MAME’s tenth anniversary, it came to just over 500 names. The number of credited contributors has more than tripled since then: over 1,600 individuals/groups have been credited with contributions.

I wonder about the numbers of contributors since 2017.

My thanks to the various contributors over the many years whether it be source code in MAME and MESS
to those that have been able to do hardware testing or reading chips, discs, tapes, diskettes, etc. Folks
providing various contributions over the many years or spending time doing bug testing to help correct
past emulation issues.

As young Mr. Grace would say….

Happy "Birthday" ;-)

Well...if I remember correctly I heard of it some weeks later by a friend (who actually was still on an Amiga back then while playing around with some C64 emulation)
...and somwhere then I started clrmame...which then surfaced 1997-09-03

25 years...of fun, work, irc nights (well at least back then)

So let's see what the next 25 years bring us....

I got my first mame at 23 years old and was the 0.62 release. Hang-On was still unplayable with a blue screen, and is amazing how the program has evolved.

Awaiting for the next release and a lot of years of MAME!!!

A lot of bad water has gone under the bridge for me in that 25 years, between unemployment, failing health, and personal catastrophes. I can honestly say that MAME saved my life, because had it not been for this little diversion, I'd have blown my fucking brains out more than once. I can't say enough thanks to the brain trust that cranks this shit out, both software and artwork. There isn't much about my past I care to remember, but this makes it possible to re-live the part I DO want to remember. Happy Birthday, MAME!

I remember when I first discovered MAME (and other standalone emulators), it was such a trip seeing familiar arcade games on my own computer, in addition to ones I'd heard about but never seen, and even more that were absolute surprises to me. Every few weeks was like another surprise delivery of classic games to discover.
Of course it's come a long way since then, supporting - almost - every game known to mankind it seems. Yet, today there are still new additions and surprises every month. Great to be along for so much of the ride, even if just as a passenger. Keep it goin'!

* audience gasps *

A cameo appearance, but still surprising.

I miss the unMAMEd updates, but understand a lot of work involved getting
the pages updated. I am guessing the Gaelco page can probably be deleted
after Morten and Peter’s outstanding work from a few years ago.

Any old entry, one or two, that can be removed with game already emulated in MAME
is welcomed. I know I sent a non-cpu section update many years earlier, but that was then.

> because had it not been for this little diversion

Same here to some extent. Nicola’s project has been
a nice diversion from some of my past real life nightmares.

Granted I now only have iPhone (everything else is down) working at this time,
I still enjoy following the updates including Sean and hap’s recent Mattel led games being supported.
It’s that type of progress that keeps me visiting and seeing what else can be preserved.

I still cross my fingers that the Casio Rz-1 drum machine can be fully emulated down
the road even though it is somewhat working at this time.

Its amazing how far MAME has come and just what a wide variety of hardware and software it can now emulate.

Seems like MAME these days can emulate everything from a bank teller computer system to a casino slot machine to a room-filling mainframe.

Happy 25th birthday MAME !!

Remember when Nicola released the first beta version ...

It took a while for MAME to gain popularity because it had a much more modular, documentation focused implementation, which mean it wasn't as fast as the other arcade emulators that were available at the time: Sparcade, Cinemulator, etc.

It's been an honor to watch MAME grow and gains strength over the years.

Congrats to all involved: the amazing devs, the testers, the dumpers, the donators, and anyone else who supported this project.

MAME is one of the projects that will be worked on and enjoyed for generations to come.

👍👍🏻👍🏼👍🏽👍🏾👍🏿

Um, I joined in 97 with the 0.16 release? no rom tool to validate the sets, the krull samples are lost (these appeared just 2 days before the next mame release and were no longer needed then)

I dunno if you use a VST host or not, but that's at least something. It WOULD be hott if down the road there were some means of hosting MAME synthesizers in production applications, but that failing you might still be able to manually play things whilst recording them.

Belated Happy 25th Birthday wishes to MAME!

DASArcade struck like lightning to me when it was first released, but MAME has been the only one to ever contain lightning in a bottle like no other.

And thanks to the original boards and a certain mod, I'll always regard Pringles in a fond way.

Just had to adjust Moose's (I miss the machine gun blazing site) statement a bit..

The first time I used MAME was in early to mid-March of 1997. The release was either 0.9 or 0.9.1.
