hbmame roms in mame

Yes, if you want to compile them in, sure. Using a mac has nothing to do with it.

Ok! So without compiling (I'm not a developer, just some small python stuff) it isn't possible? So mame must have all roms compiled into the executable or they won't run?
Would it not be great to let mame run any rom (at own risk) or is this not possible?
For example at the command line give a driver and the rom and allow mame go run it.
Where can this feature be requested maybe (if it makes sense)

No.
You'd need to compile HBMAME for mac if there isn't an existing package available.

Robbbert already answered your question. If you want to compile them in - go for it. Otherwise, no they won't ever be added to MAME and you can't request it. They are in HBMAME for a reason - they are hacks and not actually found in real arcade machines.

It's not like loading a SNES rom in an emulator where you only have one binary per game and a limited amount of assumptions about the game board can be made. There is far too much variation with arcade hardware, even among different revisions of the same game, that you cannot simply point MAME at the binaries of an undefined game and expect it to know what to do with them.
