4 Way / 8 Way Joystick designator

Is there a way to determine which games are designed for 4 way or 8 way joystick movement? Similarly is there a method to determine which games run using Joystick, Trackball, Steering Wheel?

Do you use a UI? If so, history.dat has a technical spec section for each game which states the type of joystick used.

You can determine this information simply by reading the MAME xml.

For example for the game "cps3bs32a" it's:

control type="joy" player="1" buttons="6" ways="8"
control type="joy" player="2" buttons="6" ways="8"
